Friday, September 16, 2022, the PKRS unit held counseling on Cataract Postoperative Care in the Polyclinic waiting room with resource persons: Ns. Putu Ayu Dharmaning, S.Kep.
Cataract surgery is the only way to replace the cloudy lens of the eye (cataract). Many people only focus on how the surgery is performed. In fact, post-operative care is also very important. Proper post-operative care can prevent the occurrence of an infection in the eye known as Endolphthalmitis.
- Post-cataract surgery care is the management of patients after cataract surgery during the post-operative period as well as during the days following surgery, with the aim of preventing complications such as infection, as well as accelerating the healing process and the patient's return to good health.
Cataract post-surgery care includes:
- The surgical eye should not be exposed to water / soap, dust and smoke (cigarettes, kitchen, etc.) for 1 month
- Dirty hands should not touch the eyes, keep hands and nails clean (by washing hands with clean running water and antiseptic soap). Eyes should not be wiped carelessly, use clean cotton / tissue that is used once.
- Use clean protective eyewear, if possible dark/black in color to avoid dust and sun irritation.
- Sleeping position after surgery is supine using 2 pillows stacked, or on the side of the healthy eye, so that the operated eye is on top.
- Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables that contain fiber to avoid hard bowel movements (straining).
- After surgery, the patient should not bend down, exert force, cough, lift heavy weights, scratch/feel/swab the eye area.
- Take the medicine regularly according to the dose prescribed by the doctor. Similarly, eye drops should be used on a regular basis as recommended by the doctor.
- The first control is done the next day after surgery to open the eye bandage. The second control and so on every week according to the dojter's instructions.
Other things to note after surgery:
- Maintain health conditions, if coughing, fever or in a state of illness immediately seek treatment at the nearest health service.
- Patients with diabetes and high blood pressure should monitor their blood sugar and blood pressure levels (take regular medication) to support the healing process.
- If there are complaints about the operated eye such as pain, red and swollen eyes, blurred vision, immediately control to Bali Mandara Eye Hospital.
How to instill eye drops:
- Patient's sleeping or looking up position
- Hand washing
- Open the upper verban
- Pull the lower eyelid using 1 or 2 fingers
- Hold the eye drops with the other hand and position the dropper tip 2.5 cm away from the patient's eye.
- The tip of the medicine dropper should not touch anything
- Squeeze gently so that the medicine does not come out excessively
- Close the eyes for 2-3 minutes to allow time for the eyes to absorb the medicine.
